Computational Fluid Dynamics Suggests Ecological Diversification among Stem-Gnathostomes Humberto G. Ferrón, Carlos Martínez-Pérez, Imran A. Rahman, Víctor Selles de Lucas, Héctor Botella, Philip C. J. Donoghue This dataset contains COMSOL Multiphysics files including computational fluid dynamics analyses on three dimensional models of eight taxa of Osteostraci (i.e., Boreaspis, Cephalaspis, Hemicyclaspis, Holeaspis, Kiaeraspis, Spatulaspis, Stensopelta, and Tremataspis). The data accompanies the following paper: Humberto G. Ferrón, Carlos Martínez-Pérez, Imran A. Rahman, Víctor Selles de Lucas, Héctor Botella, Philip C. J. Donoghue. 2020. Computational Fluid Dynamics Suggests Ecological Diversification among Stem-Gnathostomes. Current Biology. The dataset comprises three folders that include hydrodynamic simulations in a pelagic scenario (“Pelagic simulations” folder), simulations in a benthic scenario (“Benthic simulations” folder) and sensitivity analyses (“Sensitivity analysis” folder). In the benthic scenario, the models were positioned at three different distances above the substrate (0.1, 0.5 and 1 body lengths, indicated as 0.1BL, 0.5BL and 1.0BL in the respective files). In the pelagic scenario, eight different angles of attack were simulated at 10º intervals between 0º and 70º (indicated as 0º-70º in each of the files). In all the cases, three different flow velocities were tested (0.3, 0.65, 1.0 meters per second). For the sensitivity tests, mesh quality and domain size were checked in Stensiopleta (files in “Mesh quality” and “Domain size” folders respectively). Four domain sizes were checked in all the benthic and pelagic scenarios (300mmx1500mm, 400mmx1500mm, 300mmx1700mm, and 400mmx1700mm). Three different meshes were explored for the taxa Kiaeraspis and Stensiopelta, corresponding to the smallest and largest species, respectively. We evaluated ‘coarser’ (maximum element size of 78.0 mm and minimum element size of 24.0 mm), ‘coarse’ (maximum element size of 60.0 mm and minimum element size of 18.0 mm), and ‘normal’ (maximum element size of 40.2 mm and minimum element size of 12.0 mm) meshes (all these details indicated in file name). Working files consist of COMSOL model files (.mph files). This files can be opened in COMSOL Multiphysics, a general-purpose simulation software for modeling designs, devices, and processes in all fields of engineering, manufacturing, and scientific research (license can be purchased at www.comsol.com)). Results of the performed simulations, including presure distribution around the model as well as lift and drag coefficients, can be found within the Results node of each file.
