The 'Bare-earth' SRTM DEM is available for free for non-comerical use.

Metadata:
The 'Bare-Earth' SRTM DEM dataset is divded into five degree by five degree tiles, with 72 columns and 24 rows. 
Column and Row numbers are consistent with the orginal SRTM naming convention. 
The naming convention for each tile is BEST_version number_column_row.tif (eg. BEST_v1_01_02.tif).
BEST is an ancoynm for Bare-Earth Srtm Terrian. 
Each geotiff is georeferenced and compressed to the LZW standard.
The geotiffs were created using Matlab and have been opened successful in Matlab, ArcGIS and QGIS.
